St. Paul Lutheran Church was founded by people who emigrated from Pomerania,
an old Prussian province in northern Germany. The Sadorus Germans formally
organized a congregation on May 11, 1875. Their first pastor was the Rev.
Ernst Martens, who also served congregations in Macedonia, Tuscola, Broadlands
and Ivesdale.
They built the first St. Paul church in 1876 for $1,541; the second, in
1905, for between $5,000 and $6,000; and the current church, dedicated
in 1950, for about $88,000. In 1994 the congregation added an elevator
and new vestibule and redecorated.
